Important Dates in Our School History

Dr. G.W. Williams S.S. is named after Dr. David Garnet Wolseley Williams, a local medical doctor and former trustee of the school board for forty-eight years, thirty-five of them as chairman. Previous to the school’s renaming in 1961 it was know as Aurora High School (1888-1952) and Aurora District High School (1952-1961).
Our school motto is “A sound mind in a sound body.” (Mens sana in corpore sano)
Our school mascot is a wildcat.

1888 The school began as Aurora High School at what is now the Aurora Museum on Church Street. Its forty-four students shared two classrooms in the Aurora Public School.

1892 The school moved to a new building of its own on Wells Street. The building was equipped with outdoor plumbing.

1923 A new school was built on the Wells Street site. It was the only school between Toronto and Barrie that had both a gymnasium and an auditorium.

1952 Aurora High School became Aurora District High School. The students of the day paraded their belongings to the new building on Dunning Avenue. For the first time, cafeteria service enabled students to obtain a warm meal.

1961 Aurora District High School was named The Dr. G.W. Williams Secondary School in honour of Dr. David Garnet Wolseley Williams, a local medical doctor and former trustee of the school board for forty-eight years, thirty-five of them as chairman.

1988 A centennial reunion was held in November. Approximately twenty-five hundred former students and staff attended.
